Championship Points

Most Dogs in competition at conformation shows are competing for points toward their championship.
It takes fifteen points, including two major (wins of three, four or five points) under at least
three different judges to become an AKC "Champion of Record."  This is indicated by "Ch."
before the dog's name.

At one show, a dog can earn from one to five points toward a champion title (See POINT SCHEDULE BY DIVISION from
the SHOWS page for how many dogs or bitches it takes for points).

Once the dog is a champion, it can compete for Best of Breed without having to win in the other classes.

Points toward a chmpionship title shall be awarded to the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch of each breed or variety
based on the actual number of dogs or bitches competing in that breed or variety. The total number competing is
calculated by adding all of the dogs or bitches competing in each regular class (see ROAD To BEST IN SHOW for a list
of each of the classes). If the dog designated Winners Dog or Winners Bitch is also awarded Best of Breed or
Variety, the dogs of both sexes that have been entered for Best of Breed or Variety and defeated in such competition
shall be counted in addition to the dogs that competed in the regular classes for its sex.
If the dog designated Winners Dog or Winners Bitch is also awarded Best of Opposite Sex to Best in Breed or Variety
the dogs of its own sex that have been entered for Best of Breed or Variety compeition and have been defeated in
competition for Best of Opposite Sex shall be counted in addition to the dogs that competed in the regular classes
for its sex in calculating championship points.
After points have been computed for Winners Dog and Winners Bitch, subject to the above two stipulations, the dog
awarded Best of Winners shall be credited with the number of points calculated for Winners Dog or Winners Bitch
whichever is greater. This is referred to as "cross-over" points.
In counting the number of eligible dogs in competition, a dog that is disqualified, dismissed, excused or ordered
from the ring by the judge, or from which all awards are withheld shall not be included.
